Torre Maso Estate
The Torre Maso Estate is situated in privately owned grounds of 20 acres of olive grove, pinewoods and meadow. The two houses, 200 metres apart, have panoramic views over las Gavarres, the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. It is 7 miles from the sea as the crow flies. From the Torre, looking west, you can clearly see the Islas des Medes which form an important marine reserve 1km off the beaches at L’Estartit and Sa Riera. The area is very well known to gourmets with a wealth of fabulous restaurants on its doorstep including the Celler de Can Roca which is only 30 minutes away in Girona and the recently Michelin-starred Botic in Bisbal.
The Torre, designed by Rafael Maso, a student of Gaudi, and the modernista town architect of Girona, was built in 1911 by the local notary. Both houses have been sensitively restored to the highest standards by the leading Catalan architect, Lluis Auquer. Together they offer privacy and tranquillity in an outstanding location.
The main house is a wonderfully atmospheric Spanish farmhouse, renovated to the highest level and furnished with antiques, family portraits, rugs and Kelims. The English owners live there for most of the year so it is much more than a holiday house.
There are two sitting rooms - one huge with big welcoming sofas, an open fire and large picture windows looking out towards the mountains - the second small and cosy with TV and DVD.
The newly built kitchen/dining area is well equipped and decorated with masses of colourful pottery. On one side it opens onto a covered terrace with large dining table for the summer months and, on the other, onto a traditional Spanish courtyard with a fountain. 17 can easily be seated outside for meals.
The bedrooms are all beautifully furnished with pretty bathrooms.
Below the house is an attractive pool area with a large pool and terrace space for sunbathing or evening tapas and watching the lights twinkling along the coast below.
The Tower (Torre)
The interior has been restored sympathetically by a well-known Catalan architect and has 3 bedrooms (one double, two twins) and 2 bathrooms (one en suite), a sitting room (where one wall comprises a large modernista window) and a round dining room. The kitchen, with a large glass conservatory extension, is well equipped. Almost best of all is the large roof terrace with wonderful metal work, extraordinary views and from where, in the summer evenings, you can nearly always see shooting stars. For the winter, there is full central heating throughout and a log stove in the sitting room.
The Torre has a shady front terrace and a sunny back terrace with a 4 metre diameter round swimming pool, above ground for child safety.
