The Drôme Provençale is where Provence, the Alps, the Dauphiné and the Rhône valley all segue into one another, free from the crowds that skip straight across it as they hurry to the beaches of the Mediterranean.

It’s an old, defiant land of puckering hills, forbidding mountains and lost valleys; of olives and vines, fruit trees and farmsteads; of warm, scented breezes and fields of purple lavender.

It’s lavender that’s central to the story of these houses, which a century ago were home to 30 workers, all employed in the cultivation of the iconic purple plant.

Now beautifully renovated, the five remote houses sit in 200 hectares of private parkland, surrounded by mountains just under an hour from Montélimar.

Available only to rent all together, the houses are perfect for multiple families or large groups of friends looking to disconnect among spellbinding scenery.

A love of the outdoors is virtually a must here, with 20km of private trails and pathways surrounding the small hamlet, and multiple opportunities for mountain biking, canyoning and climbing among the limestone.

Not that enjoying the outdoors need always be so strenuous. The spacious wooden terraces at each of the five houses are perfect for yoga or a spot of Pilates. And if even that’s too much, they make pretty great places to rest a book, an easel or a G&T too.

The houses themselves are simply furnished inside and range from two to five bedrooms, with a good enough mix of king, double and twin beds to suit groups of all varieties.

Bedrooms are all en-suite and each house comes with a fully equipped kitchen and enjoys use of a shared pool that boasts 360-degree views of the stunning mountain vistas.
