Halfway between the great sand dune at Pyla and the smart surf and golf resort of Hossegor lies probably the finest stretch of sandy beach in France: the wild, Atlantic Côte d’Argent.

And it’s here at Mimizan, virtually beneath the terrace of Villa Arena itself, that the Côte d’Argent begins. Look south from the villa and all you’ll see is an uninterrupted, endless expanse of flat sand, a golden highway for sand-yachters, joggers and dog walkers. Stroll for 20 minutes and you could well be on your own, even in midsummer.

No surprises, therefore, for guessing why we love this villa. Set right by the ocean with direct access to the beach via a private staircase, the location is world class.

Four of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, with a further four upstairs. The villa has been recently renovated and the owners have gone to great lengths to select the finest bed linens for the rooms, which are otherwise simply decorated with photographs and prints, allowing the stunning ocean views to take centre stage.

Both the well-equipped kitchen and dining room are also upstairs, as is a small reading room and a spacious living room, which echoes the neutral colour palette found throughout the villa.

The exception to this rule is downstairs in the ‘Jungle Room’, so named for the forest mural that occupies one wall. With a TV in the corner, a disco ball hanging from the ceiling and only beanbag-style cushions to sit on, its’s a fun and cosy place, suitable for anything from an afternoon movie session to a teenager’s birthday party.

Outside is a spacious wooden terrace with sun loungers, a pergola, barbecue area and other outdoor furniture. Needless to say, it’s the perfect spot for sundowners.

It’s also a good spot from which to sit and check the surf. There are four recognised surf spots at Mimizan – La Garluche, Goëlands, Mouettes and Plage Sud – and surfers of all levels will find a wave to suit them here.

Surf lessons can easily be booked through the villa, as can yoga, Pilates and other local activities, from fat biking through the dunes to galloping horses down the beaches.
