Cap Ferret & Bassin d’Arcachon

One of France’s best-kept secrets.

For many years this stretch of coastline was a closely guarded secret of the French, frequented by generations of wealthy Bordelais and Parisian families.

It’s wonderful for families with loads to do and miles of wide Atlantic beaches that stretch from Lacanau right down to the Spanish coast.

Don’t come here for glam Riviera-style beach clubs, this coast is all about discreet-chic living, bikes, boats and learning to surf. And with loads of great restaurants and as many oysters as you can eat, holidaying here is unsurprisingly addictive.

The region is easily accessed by scheduled and low-cost flights via La Rochelle or Bordeaux, or by TGV to Bordeaux. You can also drive, but avoid the major French changeover days such as the 1st August when even the main motorways are at a standstill.
