Casa do Beijaflor is built in true Comporta style, with polished concrete floors, slatted wooden decks, whitewashed walls, thatched roofs hooped with tightly packed grasses from the surrounding riverbanks, and exposed wooden beams from the pine forests.
Like many of the houses around here, there are no gates or high walls, just quaint wooden walkways and sandy tracks that lead to the dunes and the beaches beyond.
Cushioned day beds and a variety of outdoor living spaces make the most of the views of the surrounding rice fields, which flick from waterlogged to luminous green as the seasons change.
This is one of the most fertile regions in Portugal, criss-crossed by canals and stripey fields of rice. In the heat of the summer, when the south of the country is dusty and dry, Comporta thrums with life. Fields beam with glowing red poppies and yellow carpets of wildflowers. Storks nest on the tops of telephone pylons. And stalls pepper the roadsides, piled with watermelons, artichokes and tomatoes that taste like sunshine.
Perfect for teenagers, a treehouse just to side the of the main house provides a whimsical fifth bedroom; the others are spread across a series of pavilions and are all en-suite and clearly decorated by someone with a flair for interior design.
In high season the house has private access to a gorgeous stretch of beach where the house staff have a tent and can organise picnics. It’s all part of the fuss-free way of life for which Comporta is so loved.
It’s hard to think of anywhere else in Portugal so fertile, so abundant, so brimming with life.
