Dordogne
Gloriously unspoilt, gloriously quiet, gloriously gourmet.
The Dordogne remains an all-time favourite, where ancestral family houses are surrounded by majestic rolling countryside, and where ancient villages hide wonderful flea markets and fabulous places to eat.
The Dordogne is easily accessed by scheduled and low-cost flights via Bordeaux or Bergerac, or by TGV train to Bordeaux. Or of course you can drive, but avoid the major French changeover days such as the 1st August when even the main motorways can come to a standstill.
