In 1958 flamboyant Scottish aristocrat Colin Tennant purchased Mustique for £45,000. In 1960 he asked the recently engaged Princess Margaret if she would prefer “something in a small box from Asprey, or a piece of Mustique” as a wedding present. Her Royal Highness chose wisely, receiving a ten-acre plot on a private peninsula towards the southern end of the island.
In the early 1970s celebrated stage designer Oliver Messel built her this very house, Les Jolies Eaux, in which she would holiday twice a year – usually in February and October/November – for much of the rest of her life. The property included a room to accommodate the Scotland Yard detectives who accompanied her, and was furnished in a simple and practical style, although her bedroom was painted vivid orange.
The house was sold outside the family in 2001, but the new owners have done a wonderful job in bringing it up to date without losing any of the Messel style for which the house was much admired, including its graceful proportions, stunning indoor-outdoor vistas, tropical-print fabrics and colonial-style furniture.
Still as magical as ever, Les Jolies Eaux is extremely private and boasts the most fabulous views from every window. The pool area houses a chic dining pavilion; on the other side is the master suite, complete with its own plunge pool.
This is a sophisticated house with the highest standards of comfort – elegant, refined living at its best.
The property comes with a fabulous team of staff, who have been with the house for years.
