Two classic Puglian structures, a conical trullo and a rectangular lamia with a high curved ceiling, have been beautifully converted into this elegant four-bedroom villa, which sits surrounded by eight acres of rich red soil and twisted, ancient olive trees.
Much of the original stonework has been preserved, lending a real sense of history and authenticity, though modern and welcome touches have also been added, like glass patio doors from the bedrooms to the terrace, a high-tech kitchen and a gorgeous, infinity-edged lap pool.
Look up from the pool and you get a true sense of how open and arid the Puglian countryside can be. The sunsets here are breathtaking and the views have a dreamlike, desert quality. Yet remarkably you’re only 7km away from a protected nature and marine reserve and one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy – Torre Guaceto.
While the rest of the surrounding coastline is now covered in bars, hotels and restaurants, this patch of sand and sea has remained blissfully free from development and offers wonderful opportunities for swimming, sunbathing and spotting plant and animal species not normally seen in this part of the world.
Between the original stonework and the rich red soil, you really get a sense of what makes Puglia what it is.
