Tell us about your origin story – how did M Beach House come to be?

M Beach House began as a naive venture by my younger self. At 24, during my first visit to the island, I had no plans to build or buy. My trip was sparked by curiosity about the works of Geoffrey Bawa, the godfather of tropical modernism. As a designer myself, I was captivated by Bawa’s profound integration of architecture with the natural environment and was eager to experience it first-hand. I then stumbled upon the bay and bought what was the first plot – a tiny, dilapidated beach shack. This purchase was the first step in joining different plots of land to create what M Beach House is today.

What makes the villa so special?

What truly sets M Beach House apart is its harmonious integration with nature, offering guests a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience and contact with thriving wildlife. The villa emphasises sustainability and local craftsmanship, featuring materials and décor sourced from within Sri Lanka, which adds an authentic touch. The views across the bay are still unparalleled for me.

What’s your favourite thing about Sri Lanka and the immediate area?

My favourite thing about Sri Lanka is its vibrant diversity, from its lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage to its compelling culinary scene – the food is amazing. In Mawella Bay, the immediate area offers an unspoiled beachfront where the rhythms of local fishermen’s daily catches and the soothing sounds of the ocean constantly remind us of the island’s bustling yet uncrowded lifestyle.

Recognising the rapid changes impacting Sri Lanka’s coastlines – from overdevelopment and environmental degradation – we, along with other stakeholders in the bay, have established the Mawella Bay Conservancy. This initiative aims to preserve the bay’s natural beauty and the livelihoods of local fishing communities against the backdrop of increasing tourism and the challenges that come with it. The conservancy is committed to protecting our local heritage through sustainable, low-footfall, high-value tourism practices that ensure the prosperity of the local community while maintaining the ecology. We use tourism as a way to sustain a precious corner of balance between nature, humans and travellers alike that is fast disappearing in the world.

Describe the importance of holidays to you.

To me, holidays are vital for rejuvenation and connection. They provide a pause from the daily hustle, an opportunity to reflect, reconnect with loved ones and immerse oneself in what might be the polar opposite of one’s life on the other side of the world. I like to stay in houses rather than hotels, as you get to live like a local for the time spent there.

What's your top travelling tip?

Always travel with an open mind and minimal expectations. Let each destination surprise you, and take the time to explore off the beaten path. For me, it’s always about trying local food, something you would not be able to do at home. A prime example is going to Smoke & Bitters, a project located in the cool surf spot of Hiriketiya, 10 minutes away from M Beach House by tuk-tuk. It’s a shack overlooking a beach that was included in Asia’s top 50 bars – the drinks are the experiment and brainchild of a local husband-and-wife duo that blend local flavours amazingly well.
